The picture on the right is of a house where I helped refinish the fir floors
underneath this gray carpet. The house is located in Portland, Oregon. The
owner took this picture of what the room looked like before the carpet was taken
up.
The door is not the original door nor is the tile in front of the door original.
The woodwork around the window show that it has been painted many times.
The high window on the right has divided panes which add to the charm of this old house.
Notice the vent near the front wall. This is often a problem spot when it comes
to refinishing as often the boards are broken around vents. The vent is a
good place to "take a peek" at what is under the carpeting.
Looking thru the front window you can see the porch railing and also get an idea
of the type of neighborhood this house is located in.

A slotting Router cuts a 1/4 inch groove into flooring after it's installed. Note the difference of the edge of the flooring before slotting on the right and the slotted edge to the left of the router. A spline is nailed into this groove and makes it so the border is tongue and grooved to the remainder of the flooring. This is very important when doing borders.
