What causes oily skin?

By Frances Stanford

Have you ever taken notice of the many different skin types for which there are cosmetics and skin care products? This is because not all products work the same for everyone. When you are buying some of these products you do need to be aware of the skin type that you have. It is also important to remember that the condition of your skin changes as you age, and in the seasons of the year. Some people have naturally oily skin because of heredity, but you do need to be able to recognize the signs of whether or not your skin is oily.

Oily skin has a shine to it, yet it appears dull. This is because the glands inside the skin are secreting too much oil. This often results in pimples and blackheads and could become a very bad case of acne. Teenagers are especially prone to oily skin because of the changing hormones in their bodies. Pregnancy can also cause changes in your complexion that result in your skin being more oily that it usually is.

Diet is one of the largest factors in causing oily skin. An excess amount of sugar and salt in your diet will cause your skin to secrete more oil and thus lead to problems. You should concentrate on eating more fruit and protein and if necessary take vitamin B12 supplements. A deficiency of this vitamin has been linked to oily skin in people of all ages. You also need to drink plenty of fluids during the day to help flush out the toxins from the skin and keep it hydrated. Your skin needs water just as the rest of your body does.

Certain cosmetics can have an adverse reaction on your skin, causing it to become oily. It is important to use hot water when you wash your face because the heat dissolves the oil and keeps it from coming to the surface. In cases where your skin is exceptionally oily, washing your face several times a day will help repair the skin. The use of soap when washing your face can clog the pores and make the problem worse, which is why it is better to always use a cleanser and to massage your face with your fingertips in an upward and outward movement.

During the summer months, you may find that your skin is oilier than it was during the colder months. This is because the high levels of humidity bring more of the oil to the surface as you perspire more. For this reason you need to have different skin care products that work for you at different times of the year.

Retinol Creams For Dry Thin Skin

By Linda Robison of Wrinkle Free Skin Tips

Sensitive, Dry, Thin Skin? Retinols Can Help

Most people are familiar with standard skin rejuvenating techniques such as Retin-A, chemical and laser peels. These types of techniques are for great middle aged people with moderate skin laxity, fine lines and wrinkle because they work by exfoliating and peeling the top layers of the skin – exposing fresh, blemish free, unlined skin underneath. However, what most people don’t realize is these techniques can actually do more harm than good for thin, dry, wrinkled aging skin because it thins the skin even further promoting sagging tissues and fine lines.

What Can You Do?

Stick with Retinol based products. A recent study in the Archives of Dermatology found that retinol creams reduced the appearance of wrinkles of participants whose medium age was 80 or over. Some found results in as early as four weeks – which is a pretty amazing considering the age of the participants. Also, retinols have been proven to help increase skin oils and produce collagen – both are extremely necessary for those with dry, thinning skin.

What About Acne Skin?

Unfortunately, many people over 40 still suffer from Acne –while trying to deal with aging skin and wrinkles – talk about a skin care challenge! Well retinols have been report to help with chronic cystic acne because of its ability to exfoliate dead skin layers and unclog pores.

What Is Retinol?

Retinol is a small molecule derived from vitamin A. It is part of a group of components called retinoids. One of the beneifts of this is that it can penetrate into deeper layers of the skin helping to building collagen. This is important in eliminating shallow wrinkles, fine lines, and increase moisture and elasticity. Retinol based creams are a great, safe anti-aging alternative for sensitive aging skin.
