Hi,

I just ran across your site and would like to ask you one simple question. I have been told over the past 15 years, from several different men, that one cannot refinish parquet flooring. I have parquet floors in every room in my home, except the kitchen and bathrooms. I just pulled up carpet from two of the rooms, and I don't believe it would be impossible to do this. I will have to do it myself (rent a sander, etc.), because I am divorced, and have no one to help.

Please let me know if it is possible and what type of sander I should rent if any in particular for parquet floors.

I would really appreciate any advice you can give me.

Parquet floors are possible to sand. Because the grain goes in different directions they are sometimes can't be sanded as easily as straight flooring.

The machine you need to rent is called a square buffer or orbital sander. You can see a picture of one at Hardwood Floor Sanders.com

These are essentially a 130 pound palm sander with a handle on it and wheels to help move it around.

A slotting Router cuts a 1/4 inch groove into flooring after it's installed. Note the difference of the edge of the flooring before slotting on the right and the slotted edge to the left of the router. A spline is nailed into this groove and makes it so the border is tongue and grooved to the remainder of the flooring. This is very important when doing borders.
